Winter is upon us, we are grateful for all of our blessings, including specialty citrus!

The Farmers on Wheels team would like to thank all of those people who have ordered our fruit boxes this fall. We appreciate the support you have given us in this, our maiden voyage into a new venture. We are inspired to share our passion for fresh fruit with you and are immensely grateful that you have been spreading the news of this new business with others. It is with great anticipation and expectation that we look forward to serve you in 2019!

Two new varieties have been arriving at Petra Produce recently, Cara Cara navels and Blood oranges. The Cara Cara navel(or red navel as it often referred) is believed to be a cross between the Washington navel and the Brazilian Bahia navel. The flavor is more complex than other navel varieties and elicits tones of cherry, rose petal, orange and blackberry. It is seedless and low in acid with little to no pith. They are fat free, saturated fat free, cholesterol free, and sodium free. An excellent source of vitamin C, fiber and folate. The Blood orange, currently the Moro variety, has crimson, almost blood-colored flesh. Later season varieties include the Sanguinello and Tarroco. The Moro and the Tarroco are native to Italy and the Sanguinello to Spain. The dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidant pigments uncommon in citrus fruits. The characteristic maroon color develops with low temperatures during the night. They also have a unique, almost raspberry-like flavor. An excellent source of vitamin C of course, but also high in folate, calcium and thiamine.

You can get this delicious fruit in our fruit boxes from thefarmersonwheels.com or at Petra Produce here at the Golden Gate Produce terminal in South San Francisco.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! JOY AND PEACE TO ALL!!
